How to Import EML files to Outlook?

EML is the abbreviation of E-mail file. It is by default linked to Windows Live Mail. Outlook application from Microsoft is an email client which also contains notes, contacts, calendar entries, tasks, etc. It is very simple to manage all the email messages and other data items in MS Outlook. By using MS Outlook, you can easily search your email messages, send or receive, edit data items. The other things which make Outlook application popular among users include graphics, exclusive themes, etc.

The data items stored in MS Outlook are in the PST file format. MS Outlook reads only those files which are in PST format. So, accessing email messages of MS Outlook Express, Apple email client, Windows Live Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird become difficult for Outlook users as these files are stored in EML format. To access EML files in Outlook, you need to convert EML files to PST format. You can convert it performing manual process.

How to Convert EML Files to PST format?

Step 1. Open Microsoft Outlook application. Click on File tab > Open > Import.

Step 2. Select Import from another Program or File option and click on Next.

Step 3. Select “Comma Separated Values” option as file format and click on Next.

Step 4. Browse the imported file and double click on it.

Step 5. Choose “Allow duplicates to be created, replace duplicates with items imported or do not import duplicate items” from the options accordingly and click on Next

Step 6. Specify the location to save the imported files and click on Next and then click on Finish to complete the process.

This converting process may sometime damage the file due to wrong execution or selecting wrong option. Its safe to take back up of email folders and then proceed with EML to PST conversion. This method is basically based on the Import/Export feature of MS Outlook. In rare case, it does not work.

While trying to import files in Outlook 2007, following error messages may pop up –

“Error 1334. The file ‘<filename>.SAM_1033’ cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in cabinet file ‘OutlkLR.CAB’. This could indicate a n/w error, an error read from the CD-ROM, package error.”

“The file ‘C:\MSOCache\All Users\{<GUID>}\’ is not a valid installation package for the product <Microsoft Office product name> (<language>) 2007. Try to find the installation package ‘OutlookMUI.msi’ in a folder from which you can install <Microsoft Office product name> MUI (<language>) 2007.”

“Error 1706. Setup cannot locate required files. Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive. For other valuable solutions to this problem, see C:\DOCUME~1\<username>\LOCALS~1\Temp\Setup0000043c\SETUP.CHM.”

These errors occur due to unavailability of some translator files or some database converters. As some files were not installed during setup, these files remain unavailable or converters may be installed on demand.

Failing of this manual method leads user to opt third-party tool to convert EML to PST. Good converter software performs multiple functions and thus called multi-utility. Know how to move email messages from Windows Live Mail to Outlook

  1. Open Windows Live Mail and Outlook.
  2. Select Windows Live Mail window and follow this – File -> Export -> Email messages
  3. Set “Microsoft Exchange” file format and press Next.
  4. A message box will be popped to inform all emails will be exported to Microsoft Exchange or Outlook. OK it to proceed.
  5. Choose mail folder or export all the folders by using Select folders.
  6. Press OK button and let the export process complete. Time taken by the process depends on number of folders being exported.
  7. Message box will appear once exporting is done. Select Finish.

Note: Importing emails from Outlook Express or WLM to Outlook 2013 needs 32-bit Outlook 2013 application. 64-bit application encounters issues while moving email folders.
